Notre-Dame Cathedral in Tournai

Ralf Regele Germany - 22-Dec-23

Notre-Dame Cathedral in Tournai

I mainly want to give an update about the renovations taking place at the cathedral of Tournai. As of December 2023, the scaffoldings on the outside are mostly removed, so the main body of the cathedral can be seen again in all of its gray glory. However, there are still extensive renovation works going on inside the cathedral. Almost half of the interior is blocked off and under scaffolding, including the complete gothic choir. So they are working on it since almost 20 years now ? The open parts are also a bit unkempt, with tools lying around, bad lighting and artwork in strange places. So it is still not the best time to visit the cathedral. As for my general impression, I agree with most reviewers that it is not the most interesting cathedral

Big Bend National Park (T)

Big Bend National Park (T)

I was initially skeptical if the Big Bend National Park is a good travel choice, let alone a good choice for a world heritage site. It is never mentioned as one of the greatest US national parks, in fact, it is hardly mentioned at all. Also, the often displayed image of an U-shaped canyon is actually from horseshoe bend (1000 miles to the west), and is not present in the Big Bend NP. Luckily, Big Bend turned out to be a very enjoyable national park and worthy candidate

Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona

Ralf Regele Germany - 27-Sep-23

Swiss Tectonic Arena Sardona

I mainly want to give an update about the accessability of the WHS area. In Flims, the old cable cars are replaced by a new system called "Flims Express", which will serve the Foppa-Naraus-Fil de Cassons line. However, the new lift is not expected to be operational before the end of 2024, and the old cable cars are already out of service. This means that the cable car tour described in some of the other reviews is no longer available. You can still hike the Foppa-Fil de Cassons route, but this means hiking all the way up from Flims and down again. To at least get a a good view of the main "arena" area with the Tschingelhörner, I opted for the alternative route from Flims, which is going up by the second main cable car line "ArenaExpress" up to Nagens

Les « coules » de Petite Valachie (T)

Les « coules » de Petite Valachie (T)

Some reviewers have already noted that the 'coules de petite valachie' TWHS is quite close to the already inscribed Horezu monastry WHS. So is this just a minor sidestep on the way to something more worthwhile, or can it stand on its own ? My initial reaction was indeed "Ah, it is so close, might as well spend a couple of minutes there". However, the site at Maldaresti is actually quite a nice heritage area, with two of the mysterious 'cula', an old church, a little heritage house and some nice green surroundings. The culas itself are interesting, too, being a mixture of a country house and a fortress from a time when the area was seemingly so dangerous that everything needed to be fortified - castles, villages, churches, houses

Ensemble de grottes à concrétions du Sud de la France (T)

Ralf Regele Germany - 27-May-23

On the way towards the Mont Perdu WHS from the french side, I made a visit to the "Gouffre D'Esparros" cave, which is part of the obscure TWHS "Ensemble de grottes a concretions du Sud de la France". The cave is a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, the GPS should find it, the roads are fine and the infrastructure for the visit is actually pretty good. Despite visiting on a long weekend with nice weather, I was the only visitor for the early tour, so I had my own private tour guide. The cave itself is quite nice (but I have a soft side for caves). Although the cave has a rather vertical layout, the tour path itself was completely horizontal and easy to walk. The stalagmites were nice but not too numerous
